Alcatel have a HUGE map showing the various undersea fibre optic cable connections between Australia and the rest of the world:

  • JASURAUS: Port Hedland (north west coast) to Jakarta
  • SEA-ME-WE3: Perth (west coast) to Jakarta
  • APNG: Papua New Guinea to Cairns (north east coast)
  • Bass Strait 1 and 2: Australian Mainland to Tasmania
  • Tasman 2: Australia to New Zealand
  • Southern Cross: Sydney to Fiji to Hawaii, to the rest of US
  • Southern Cross: Sydney to Auckland to Hawaii to the rest of US
  • PACRIM EAST: Auckland to Hawaii
  • AJC: North and South of Sydney, to south of Tokyo

CyberGeography has a summary of the various ways that the world is connected to Australia.

Global Crossing shows the network that they manage.

The tip of Africa (my interest being South Africa) is rather poorly connected:

  • SAFE: Cape Town and Durban to Mauritius, India, Malaysia, and Hong Kong
  • SAT2: Cape Town to various Atlantic islands, then Morocco, Spain
  • SAT3/WASC: Cape Town, up the west coast of Africa, some islands, Morocco, Spain, France
