I was wondering whether the chart showing the green house gas emissions caused by our electricty usage should be zero. I called AGl and the customer service person tried to explain why we might still see emissions even if we chose 100% energy…. hmm
I checked the website noted below the chart. Under “sample bill”, it notes that the emissions figure should reduce to 0 with 100 % energy. I wait to see what the next bill says!
Other points to note:
The calculation works by using a greenhouse gas coefficient. The sources of energy determine the coefficient. Tasmania is 0 (Hydro power) and Victoria is worst (due to the use of brown coal).
According to the 2006 Q3 Green Power report, AGL sourced their accredited renewable green energy from wind and biomass. Integral’s “Pure” option has only just started but is so far sourced from Hydro.
There is a full list of green power generators here.
