Check if you’ve been hacked

A reminder list of ways to check if your site is unintentionally hosting spammers content or links:

How many pages or posts do you have?

One site I saw was unintentionally hosting thousands of pages that were not showing in their main menu. Check in wordpress, check your database with phpmyadmin, check your stats for entry pages

Strange Outgoing Links

Run a link checker such as Xenu link check and look through the valid links as well as the invalid - do you recognise them all?

Strange Keywords being used to access your site?

Use the google webmaster tools and check the statistics - see what keywords are listed for your site.

File changes

Use filezilla or your hosts filemanager. Check the modification date of the files on your sites. Are any out of line with the other files? what is that file?

Whether you found anything or not, there are some simple things that can be done to make your site a little harder to crack, even if you have limited technical knowledge. See a discussion of these in the next post.
