So do you have a good website? Not sure? Want to know whether your designer has done a good job? Want to know what improvements might be worth doing?
You can assess the effectiveness of your website your self from my tips below, or you can hire me to do it for you. I will deliver a report with specific points that you can either use to decide whether to change web designers or to send back to your web designer to improve your web.
One approach is to start from the “outside”:
Search
- Search for yourself as an outsider using appropriate keywords. Depending on your field and the number of competitors, you may have to get quite specific before your site comes up (which hopefully it will)
- without geographic preference
- with geographic preference
- If your site still does not come up on page 1 (there are many reasons why this may be), search for your exact name or domain name. Google Example.
- Check how it appears
- Is the title correct? Is there a meaningful description?
Content
- Click on your website pretending to be a customer seeking information.
- Can you easily see what your website is about and whether it is likely to provide the information that you need? For example if you are a restaurant, do you have a sample menu and pictures of your location?
- Are the contact details, or the locations easy to find?
- If you are selling goods or services, is it easy to find product details and prices, or is it all flash and no content?
- Try to contact the business
- Save the contact details – can you cut and paste, or do you have to retype the info?
- Are there multiple contact methods – can you see who the business actually is
- Try to order something
- Can you find delivery info easily?
- Can you find product details like price and warranty information easily?
